Big Format Change in Home Storage Cells

This year marks a major shift in residential energy storage cells. The 100Ah LiFePO4 cell — long the standard for home battery packs — is slowly losing its spot. Larger 280Ah LiFePO4 cell and 314Ah LiFePO4 cell are moving fast into home systems, especially in Europe and Australia. Even 122Ah, 392Ah, and 500Ah+ cells are starting to show up in residential and balcony storage. The home storage cell market is doing what the utility-scale market did a few years ago — moving from small to large format.
From Q2 2026, the penetration rate of 314Ah LiFePO4 cells in residential storage passed 50%. They're even entering balcony storage now.

100Ah Out, 314Ah Becomes the New Home Standard

Before 2026, 100Ah cells ruled residential storage. Most home systems use 48V or 51.2V architecture, with 15 or 16 cells in series. A 100Ah 51.2V battery gives about 5kWh — perfect for overseas homes. Smaller 50Ah and 72Ah cells were used in balcony and portable units.
In 2025, home storage demand jumped, but 100Ah cell supply didn't keep up. Price climbed to nearly RMB 0.5/Wh — higher than 314Ah cells. By late 2025, system makers started switching to 280Ah and 314Ah cells. In Q1 2026, large-format penetration passed 20%. By Q2 2026, top brands reported over 50% of shipments using 314Ah cells. Now 314Ah is the new mainstream residential cell.

Why 314Ah Replaces 100Ah So Fast

Three reasons:
  1. 100Ah cost reduction hit a wall. Material and process optimization is maxed out. 314Ah cells cut the number of cells per pack, reduce connectors, simplify busbars, cut BMS sampling points, and lower PACK parts count — total system cost drops.
  2. Cycle life is way better.100Ah cells do 3,000–5,000 cycles. 314Ah LiFePO4 cells do 8,000–10,000+ cycles. Lower levelized cost over life.
  3. Supply favors large format. Cell makers prefer building 314Ah, 587Ah, 628Ah for utility storage. As 500Ah+ cells ramp up, 280Ah/314Ah capacity frees up for residential — cheaper and easier to get.

314Ah Enters Balcony Storage

Balcony storage used to mean 1–2kWh units with 50Ah or 72Ah cells. Now Chinese brands are putting 314Ah LiFePO4 cells into balcony systems — lower cost, smaller footprint, same supply chain as home and utility storage. Early days, but penetration will climb fast.

What About 122Ah, 392Ah, 500Ah+ Cells

122Ah cell is a smart middle step. SVOLT and Pengcheng launched 122Ah residential cells in 2026. Same size as old 104Ah cells, more capacity, better charge/discharge.
Why 122Ah? Australia's STC subsidy tiers (effective May 1, 2026): 0–14kWh full, 14–28kWh 60%, 28–50kWh 15%, 50kWh+ none. A 122Ah module = 7kWh, two modules = 14kWh — exact full-subsidy sweet spot. SVOLT's 122Ah cell mass-produced Q4 2025, 3–4GWh shipment expected in 2026.
Utility market is moving to 500Ah+ cells. Hithium already launched MaxPower16 (314Ah) and MaxPower30 (587Ah) low-voltage home packs. New brand ARKVOLT R30 uses 587Ah cells to cut parts and wiring for high-demand homes. Multiple brands are testing 392Ah, 500Ah+, and bigger formats for residential. Next few years: multiple specs for multiple sub-segments.
